Summary: "handheld CB"

The cobra HH38 WX ST 40 channel CB has preformed real well. I use it on my flagging job talking to the trucks cominng and going. It is nice to be able to get the weather station while flagging. I use this CB while traveling on the interstate and I know what is going on ahead of me.

Summary: "If you're in a car, you need an NGP Antenna..."

What's an NGP antenna? Good question. I won't tell you, actually, because it's REALLY technical, and if you feel like getting into it you can google it yourself right now. The short (and not-entirely-technically-correct-but-it's-close-enough) answer is that like any electronic device, a radio needs to be grounded to work properly, and if you're holding the radio, sitting in your car on your leather-covered foam seat attached to rubber tires, you're not very well grounded, and the radio won't work very well. You need a special antenna for car use, and only then will you get the performance that this thing is capable of. The bottom line is that radios like these are NOT the plug-and-play devices we've come to expect from consumer electronics; they are precision instruments which require a bit of thought and consideration if you're going to get the maximum capability out of them.

That said, this is a great little device, but it's a little silly for use only in a car. I bought it to use with a motorcycle audio system, and I have the special antenna I just wrote about, and the darn thing works fine. Because of the special antenna setup, which includes an 18-foot wire (doesn't have to connect to anything in particular except the radio; it just has to be there) and the horrendous battery usage (better to use the DC power coupling), you're going to be pretty well-wired into the car anyhow, so you might as well bite the bullet and get a full-size CB, like the Midland 1001Z, for which, because you bolt the radio itself to the body of the car, you might not even need the special NGP antenna. Go figure...

Summary: "Identical to the ROAD TRIP model but lacks magnetic antenna"

This CB Radio is identical to the model sold as the "HH Road Trip". For a dollar more, the latter model also includes a magnetic rooftop antenna with coax cable. The radios are the same, down to the model number inside the package, the manual, and the FCC type certification.

I think Amazon should tell users that the HH Road Trip includes an antenna for the same cost, and is the same product. Otherwise, they should reduce the price of this package to account for the lack of a magnetic mount antenna.

Summary: "fun"

This is a cool little radio.I have had the oppertunity to try it on my base rig and as my mobile and it works just fine.The rubber duck antenna is good for about a mile or so but I use a cobra HG A 1500 mag mount on my car a 98 Rav4. Out on the Hwy I get 3-5 miles in all directions so with that in mind I give this radio 5 out of 5 stars.

Summary: "great with the right setup"

I didn't want to permantely mount my full size CB in my new Nissan Altima yet as I still can't find a good spot to mount it. So for an upcoming trip to Wisconsin I purchased my first portable hand held unit. With the standard Rubber Duck antenna the reception inside the car is pretty bad, but using a Cobra conversion adapter I've connected my Wilson 1000 mag mount to the portable and reception and transmission is almost as good as my Ranger full size unit.
